The Amsterdam Student Orchestra is a young orchestra located in Amsterdam. The orchestra is a mix of old students from the youth orchestra conducted by Peter Veenhuizen and other musicians from different musical backgrounds. The orchestra currently consists of around 40 people and welcomes new musicians all year long depending on the availability.
We rehearse every Monday from 20:00 til 22:00 in the Willem de Zwijgerkerk in Amsterdam-Zuid.
Moreover, in contrast with other student orchestras, the Amsterdam Student Orchestra does not hold selective auditions. Everyone is welcome. However the board is in charge of an amount of spots available for each instrument group, thus a waiting list is held for those willing to sign up in the future.
Within its short period of existence, the orchestra has already been dragged into numerous large scale projects. In November 2012, just a few months after its creation, the Amsterdam Student Orchestra played the world première of the Let’s Twitter Symfonie by Laurens de Rooyen, for the Pensioenexpeditie. This symphony has been recorded and is available for sell. That same year, a Jacques Brel programme and Fauré’s Requiem were also played. Besides, the orchestra also performed for the Amsterdam Light Festival, for the inauguaration of King Willem-Alexander and for the “Paleis het Loo”.
In two years time, tje Amsterdam Student Orchestra has grown, becoming a student association, performing music together, holds montly drinks and ASOcial evenings in different locations. Are you curious about the A.S.O? Then come and play with us on Monday evenings. To sign up or request more information, you can contact us by email at: info@amsterdamsstudentenorkest.nl
